Why People Procrastinate and How It Affects Their Lives We all have things we know we should do, but sometimes we keep putting them off. “I’ll do it later” becomes “I’ll do it tomorrow,” and before we realize it, days or even weeks have passed. This is called PROCRASTINNATION - delaying something that needs to be done even when we know the delay may create problems later. Why do people procrastinate? Procrastination is not always about laziness. People may delay tasks because they seem difficult, boring, overwhelming, or stressful. Sometimes, the fear of making a mistake can also make someone avoid starting. Another common reason is distraction. Social media, entertainment, messages, and other activities can easily take our attention away from important tasks. How does procrastination affect our lives? The biggest problem is that delayed tasks usually do not disappear. They often come back with more pressure. Procrastination can lead to: Missed deadlines and opportunities Increased stress and anxiety Poor-quality work because of rushing Feelings of guilt and frustration Difficulty reaching personal and professional goals A habit of constantly working under pressure The good news is that procrastination can be reduced. Instead of waiting until you feel motivated, start with something small. Spend just 10 minutes on the task. Break a large task into smaller steps and focus on completing the first one. Sometimes, starting is more important than feeling ready. The next time you catch yourself saying, “I’ll do it later,” ask yourself: What can I do right now, even if it is just one small step?
